In the archives, an article dating back 33 years has surfaced that talks about the village of Bianzone, its origins, some of its points of interest and the projects that the administration of the time was planning. Here is a summary of it:

Bianzone thus presents itself as a village that, while proud of its agricultural and noble past, seeks to offer new opportunities to new generations so that they can continue to live in the land of their ancestors.

Reading accounts of the past has its charm because it allows us to make a comparison with the present. Some things have been achieved, but still several problems remain, such as road safety and the depopulation of small towns. There is still a long way ahead, but the people of Bianzone, as mentioned in the article, when there is work to be done!

Also worth mentioning are the advertising pages for some companies, shops and premises of the past, some of which are no longer there. In this regard, if anyone has photos or information about shops and shops that once existed in the village, please leave them with the municipality or send them to the Ecomuseo email address: info@ecomuseoterrazzeretiche.it They will be used by the Primary School for a project to map the ancient crafts once present in Bianzone.

Forty years of meetings, outings, solidarity and, above all, friendship. The association “Third Age Beautiful Age” celebrated Tuesday 21 April its 40th anniversary. For the occasion, 64 members (out of a total of 105) gathered at the La Gatta estate for a convivial lunch of typical Valtellina specialities, marking a moment of profound unity for the local community.

A story born in 1986
President Salvatore Scordari, visibly emotional, retraced the steps of a journey that began in 1986, when he had just arrived in the village and accepted the challenge of leading the group, encouraged by his wife Claudia Mevio and his new Valtellina friends. In his speech, Scordari paid tribute to the founding members, delivering a gift to those present and to the families of those who are no longer with us.

Among the names remembered with warm applause were the founders Igino Ronchi, Iolanda Castelanelli, Bruna Garzetti, Laura Nemesi, Stella Augugliaro, Alberto Giudice, Franco Paggi, Erica Zucchetti and Marisa Delle Coste.

Special recognition also went to the current Board staff - Bruna Fiorina, Franca Gosatti, Loretta Caligari, Renato Gusmeroli and Riccarda Negrini - tireless driver of association activities.

The value of wisdom
Bringing greetings from the municipal administration was Deputy Mayor Luana Dorsa, who read a speech focusing on the profound meaning of the “Third Age”. “You are valuable to our community“he began, emphasising that the association is a
example of “continuous becoming” capable of uniting different generations through the desire to be together. The deputy mayor also praised the vitality of the members, mentioning the association's internal walking group.

Projects for tomorrow
Despite the important anniversary, the gaze is already turned to the future. President Scordari expressed the hope that the openness towards young people and others in the country, which has started in recent years, can be further consolidated. “Sbut for new people to join
to us with new enthusiasm and new ideas” concluded the president, symbolically making an appointment for everyone to meet in ten years' time to celebrate the association's half-century anniversary together.

In the past....

on 25 April, the day dedicated to St Mark and the Liberation, it was traditional to go in procession to the church of San Martino.

The church of San Martino has early medieval origins.

It is oriented towards the equinoctial sunrise and dedicated to the holy bishop of Tours, held in high esteem in Carolingian times.

For years, the church has been closed to the public, it has even been deconsecrated and the bell, cast by Gregorio Quadrio of Ponte in Valtellina in 1591 and donated by Gianluigi Pergola, has been removed.

Despite this, the people of Bianzone maintain a strong bond with this sacred place on the border with Villa di Tirano, in the area where the village originally stood. Memories are still alive in the older people of the celebrations for St. Gotthard:

At the beginning of May, a mass dedicated to St Gotthard was celebrated in St Martin's Church. In the churchyard there were stalls and it was an important feast especially for children, who could enjoy, at least for a day, the sight of many toys and in some cases there was even the possibility of taking at least one of them home.

The typical sweet of this feast was the red pipe.

Every year, to enhance this sacred property, a nativity scene is set up in the ossuary of the 18th-century structure, now totally bare, once completely painted. Among the various depictions was a goat symbolising the devil, which parents resorted to in order to strike fear into their children if they came home late at night.

The interior of the church, with a single nave covered with several vaults, is bare. Traces of 18th-century painting remain on the left wall where the St. Gotthard altar was placed, in the presbytery and especially in the sacristy. Here, the image of St. Martin on horseback cutting the cloak to cover the poor is still clearly visible.

In the second half of the 1970s it was the subject of major restoration work strongly desired by the then parish priest Don Virginio Zubiani who wanted to reopen it for worship. The roof of the church and ossuary, replaced the stained glass windows, placed the ducting, painted the facade main, repaired the gate, The deteriorated concrete fountain was removed and replaced by the current one. fontanelle embedded in the churchyard wall. Inside, the cornice e the electrical system and the stone slabs had been prepared to remake the floor which were then placed by parish priest Don Bruno Rocca.

Despite all these works, the Church of St. Martin was never reopened.

Its brightness, acoustics and location accessible by car, on foot and by bicycle make it a potentially suitable place for visitors.

“In the year one thousand six hundred and seventy-five, on the sixth day of April, Battista de Flagelli, or Fragiti di Bianzone, a simple and God-fearing man, as the Rt Rev. Provost was leaving his house to go and celebrate Mass, met me at the door of my house in the Rectory, all thoughtful and greeting me, said he had something important to discuss with me and I said: and what do you have to tell me? He said, full of redness, that he did not dare to reveal it, because, being a sinful man, he did not know whether he would believe it, but in any case that he could not keep silent about it, because, after knowing it, he could not have rest or repose unless he revealed it. I pleaded with him, thinking he wanted to talk to me about something else, and he added:
The truth is that on the 26th day of the last month of March, which was the first day after the Annunciation of the Ever-Virgin Mary, after having commended myself to God and to his Most Holy Mother Mary at the beginning of the night, at about two o'clock in the morning, I was awake in bed and saw the poor, black house, in which I usually sleep, shining with rays and splendours greater than those of the Sun. Mother Mary at the beginning of the night, at about two o'clock, when I woke up and was in bed, I saw the poor black house in which I usually sleep shining with rays and splendours greater than those of the sun, indeed it seemed that the whole house was made of the finest gold, and I felt such pleasure in my soul It seemed as if I were in Paradise and among so many delights and splendours I heard a voice, and it seemed to me to be the Virgin Mary, if I saw her well, who said to me, go, announce to the Provost and to the people of Bianzone that in my honour they should have an altar raised and my temple situated here on this plain reduced to a more honourable state, Tell them that if they do so, I promise them my blessing and protection, otherwise they will beware of the chastisements that you are enduring and at that time, since I was infirm with a ruptured intestine, I felt healed as I am now healthy and I truly believe that it was the Blessed Virgin although I did not discern her among so many splendours, and I said they would not believe me, and I was warned that I should begin to lead stones and rocks and contribute something of my poverty, so I promised to give her two spoonfuls of wine, and at once I led a few cartloads of stones, and so at that moment that great splendour departed: I delayed till now because I did not dare to say it, since I am an abject person, poor and a great sinner, but finding no rest I was forced to say it, and I offer to endure any torment to confirm this truth. I then told him that he should seek out the Bianzone officials, and he replied that I wanted to tell them on his behalf and that he offered to appear and affirm the whole thing; I then went to celebrate Holy Mass and afterwards I spoke about it with my Lord Canons, that is to say the R Sig. Sig.P. Antonio Zanina, with Sig. P. Carlo Adda and with R. Sig. P. Giov. Nodari, who with other people went separately to meet the Baptist to inform him of the truth and to all replied the same, and after a few days I requested that the Council of this Mag.After a few days I requested that the Council of this Magistrate's College be assembled, since I wanted to speak to him about this success, and in the said Council, having explained everything as above, I told him that I could not canonically approve such an apparition, because this is to be done by the Lord Superiors, but in any case, since it is a pious and holy thing to restore the Church to a more honourable state, it would be good not to be against it, and that in doing this to the honour of the Virgin Mary, they could only expect great good.
So that Magical Council determined the adherir to these aids as follows...”.”

After the Apparition took place in the humble, blackened house of Battista De Flagelli, located close to Piazza Vanoni, a grandiose project to enlarge the Piano church was initiated, which also led to the construction of the present monumental façade that stands out from the view of those arriving from Sondrio.

The event is recounted in the following volumes:

We became aware of this show after the 40th anniversary ceremony of the Madonna del Piano. We contacted the organisers who told us that they would be coming to Aprica. We in Bianzone don't have a stage and suitable equipment to host them but we will go as a representative. Saturday 21 FEBRUARY at 21 right here in Aprica, at the conference hall of the business centre. One thing we can share with you about this performance. It all started in 2020 from a project by a secondary school class in Milan. The students had to prepare two pages of screenplay about a sportsman who left his mark as an athlete and as a man. The works were then evaluated by a jury of professionals from the worlds of entertainment, journalism and sport, and the work that was awarded was this one! As a reward, the two pages written by the student became a real script that has been presented to the public for some time now. On Saturday it will come to Valtellina for the first time. Come numerous to see it. In the meantime, we leave you with an article written by Vanda Cerveri from the old site that speaks precisely about Nino Bibbia:

Immediately Don Giuseppe Carozzi of Motta sent me eighty Jews from Aprica (where they had been confined for months), women, children, men with suitcases to be sent to Switzerland. I first spoke to the Brigadier of the Guardia di Finanza in Campione above Bratta. They took them under their protection, accompanied them and then, with them, they all took refuge across the border. From that day on, many people came up to Bratta and to expatriate; several also knocked on my door day and night. A large group of ex-Italian soldiers who had taken refuge in Switzerland also came by: they were frantic; my sister Maria prepared a pot of tea for them, which was very welcome.

It's New Year's Eve. We greet 2025 with photos taken on 31 December 2020 when the greatest wish for the new year was to make the covid disappear.

But have you ever wondered what people did in our countries 100 years ago?

Here is a testimony written by Vanda Cerveri:

BIANZONE, 1950s: New Year's Eve in the barn

Flash back of a life lived: “Gh'è temp, gh'è temp..” (there is time, there is time..)

“Stasira am specia l'an noef, sa fa festa e sa va a lec’ tardi” (Tonight we wait for the new year, we party and we go to bed late) is the phrase I hear repeated already in the morning.

I also really like the idea because in my house we usually go to bed almost immediately after eating soup and the word 'feast' is only uttered when talking about Sundays or other days when there is mass.

The day is longer than usual because I can't wait for dark. And darkness finally arrives. We all have dinner together and, strangely, my mum doesn't insist as usual that I eat more. My brothers are already grown up and go off on their own. They say they will go around the country with partners (friends) to stop the old year.

Preparations are made.

In the scoss (which is the apron without a bib, tied at the waist and held up by the flaps), the mother puts a few apples, some pears, a few walnuts, a few bunches of white grapes with small berries that are good, she says, if you eat them on New Year's Eve, and some brasciadeli (dry bread doughnuts).

I bring my nice little magazine, the gift that the Baby Jesus brought me because my teacher called Lidia told him I did well at school.

The father goes to the cellar to fill al lìtru (a pot-bellied, white and blue earthenware jug) with good wine, the older one that, as he often says, al fa resuscità anca i mòort, kept in a separate cask. He also takes some luganeghi (dried sausages) and a piece of cheese from the old one.

Then, with a large woollen shawl over our shoulders and holding each other tightly, we go together, almost in a hurry because of the bitter cold, to our stable, a rustic room without windows, long and narrow with walls blackened by the years, where there is always a nice warmth due to the presence of the cows and other animals.

One enters trying to quickly close the door to keep out the cold and then sits on top of a pile of straw. The air is very humid and stale. Even though it's impregnated with the typical smell of manure, it doesn't bother me because, as Mum says, it's completely natural.

At the back of the barn are the two cows tied to the manger. They are already lying down and ruminating continuously. They seem to be eating fag. When they turn towards us, they stop chewing for a moment and remain motionless. But as soon as their dad turns to them, calling them by name: “Hey, Bionda tranquila, l'è tut a post...”. “Bucc, che ma cùntat? Éh?”, they calm down and resume moving their mouths with the usual rhythm.

The little calf, a little further on, can't keep still, gets up, lies down, and then gets up again, looks at me and seems to want to communicate something to me. I then approach him, tell him to be quiet, stroke him a little and he slowly goes back to lying down.

In one corner is the très (small plank fence) with the ciùn (pig) that I can never get a good look at except when I let my dad lift me up to look down. What I like most about my ciùn is its curly tail. Even if I can't see him, every now and then I hear him, grunf ... grunf ... approaching the truogolo to noisily sip some of his colubbia (slop), spraying it all over the place, even over the slats.

Above the mugèl de la gràsa (pile of day-old manure) the hens perch, motionless, on horizontal poles fixed to the wall. Every now and then, however, one or the other loses its balance, bumping into the nearest one and creating general mayhem. I am amused by their acrobatics to regain their places and sadistically stand there waiting to watch them fall en masse onto the manure, but each time I am disappointed because, almost as if by magic, after so much turmoil and uproar, everything comes together again.

I leaf through the Corrierino dei piccoli, although the dim light of the too-dirty bulb does not allow me to read much. Mum, as always, makes socks and dad fixes the "stropi" (shoulder straps) of the basket, he always finds something to do even in the stable.

“Ueih, ga siif? Am sa scià!” (Are you there? We are there!)

The door opens ajar and the father: “Vignin a la quick! Serì fo subit que li vachi i ciapa frec’ e dopu adiu lac’!” (Enter quickly. Close quickly otherwise the cows will catch cold and afterwards goodbye milk!)

They are the neighbours: the Rosa Ciapèta, at Lurenzin, the Delina Peciàta, the Mighina Peregascia, at Gim. They sit with us on the straw. They too have brought something to eat. La Rosa lays a wrapper on an del scagn de mulsc (milking stool) that intrigues me.

He removes the mantìn (napkin) and some beautiful loaves of bread with figs and walnuts appear, fresh from the oven, or better still warm from the oven, which really makes my mouth water! I reach out my hand to take a piece. “Gh'è temp, gh'è temp .. (There's time, there's time)” they all say to me in chorus. And the Rose covers all that goodness. To take my mind off it, I immerse myself in the pictures in my comic book and talk a little with the comic characters.

At a certain point the tones of voices become heated.

They talk about the Bratta road they are building and the problems there have been because of the route. My dad often repeats that he is among those who have had to lose the most ground.

“Bloody hell, I've passed with two bends on my side, and I've been left with a good bit of field and then, if you'd gone to Sundri to complain, there would have been three bends!’

(But with the new road, you can now bring home the hay and potatoes much better than before, because the cows had too much trouble pulling the cart up from Via Guarnelle)

I immediately put the magazine aside and settle down well in the straw. I like to hear the grown-ups talking. The evening gets livelier and livelier with the discussions of the men, who between breaks have a drink of wine, passing the lìtru from one to the other. Yes, they are always the ones holding court.

The women barely manage to get into their conversations and, as soon as they mention something, they are immediately silenced because “quisti i’ è robi de um e miga de femni” (these are things for men, not women). So they chat a little among themselves.

I, however, only listen to men.

I enjoy watching them argue because they get angry, make funny faces, gesticulate, move, stand up and sit down all the time ...

The past few years of war is always the most talked about topic.

I am there with her, I scream, I try to escape, but someone holds me back and I can't, I can't even shout anymore ... I hear my name repeated ...

I open my eyes and ... and thank goodness!!! I see my mother wishing me a Happy New Year and telling me to get up because we have to go to “mass first”. I look around and realise with relief that I am in my bed.

On 13 September 2025, a large number of people attended the concert ‘Innalza il tuo cuore’ (Raise your heart) by the vocal group D'Altro Canto from Tirano directed by Gabriella Perfetto and accompanied on piano by Mirco Franchetti and on guitar by Umberto Clementi. The title was chosen specifically because people visiting the Sanctuary tend to look both outside towards the main façade and inside to admire the frescoes depicting the Assumption of Mary or the stuccoes on the side altars, for example. The term 'raising' has also been given a symbolic meaning linked to the 1970s when Don Virginio Zubiani, together with a group of citizens, began a hard struggle, witnessed in the book THE MADONNA DEL PIANO IS IN DANGER, to try to open people's eyes and get the funds to restore the church inside and out and even move the road!

The concert, as one of the last songs sung put it so well, was intended to be a feast of the heart in the hearts of us all. The protagonist was Our Lady described as woman and as mother, identified in the prayers from the world or in the daily gestures of an elderly woman or a young woman in difficulty.

Those present were also able to admire the exhibition and, many of them, see more than 400 photos and various documents related to the history of the Sanctuary.

Caning and whipping in the streets of the village for all to see, exposure tied to chains in the public square to be the object of ridicule; even quartering in the case of lese majesty or conspiracy against the honour of the Three Leagues. These were some of the corporal punishments that, during Graubünden domination (from 1512 to 1797), were inflicted on the citizens of Valtellina and Bianzone in the case of light or serious offences. It was not good at school either, where rods and stirrups (sticks) were used to correct pupils' faults.
There is a wealth of information in the book “Da un Ave Maria all'altra. La magnifica comunità di Bianzone al tempo di Grigioni” (From one Hail Mary to the next. The magnificent community of Bianzone at the time of the Grigioni), written by Vanda Cerveri with the contribution of Christian Sertorio, most of it almost coming from a manuscript of 1638 found in the Sondrio historical archives and translated in full. This book is a tribute to the peasant roots of Bianzone, to the apparent prosperity in which the people lived, in reality controlled by the Grigioni, to the wealth given by the vineyards, to the work and sacrifices of the Bianzonaschi, to the significance of the ringing of the bells and much more.

L'articolo Da un’Ave Maria all’altra proviene da Ecomuseo Bianzone.
